The concept of the Digital Locker was spawned by two very distinct trends, first by the dramatic increase in home use of computers and the Internet. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, nearly two-thirds of all children ages 3 to 17 lived in households with at least one computer. Thirty percent of all children used the Internet at home. Internet usage has continued to grow exponentially since then.

The Digital Locker was also created in response to rising concerns among educators that students, particularly in grades 4 through 12, are becoming disinterested in the traditional school. As students become more Internet savvy, schools are competing with this new social and entertainment paradigm. The Digital Locker is a step toward bringing schools into the Internet age and reconnecting the Internet generation with the classroom.

Using the accessibility of the Internet, Digital Locker enables instructors to store and post information from anywhere at anytime, giving students and parents authorized access to assignments, instructional guides, research materials and other information. It is a centralized platform for extending the classroom into the home. Through this combination of education and technology, educators can begin to harness the strength of the Internet to improve instructional effectiveness and communication among administrators, faculty, parents and students.
